Preventive Medical Examination (PME)
What are occupational medical examinations?
Occupational health examinations are medical examinations that assess whether an employee is physically and mentally fit for a particular job. In some cases, these examinations are mandatory, for example in high-risk occupations, when working under special conditions, or when required by industry regulations.
Examples of occupational health examinations include:
- Pre-employment medical examinations
- Driver's license examinations (e.g., commercial driver's license, Code 95)
- Offshore inspections
- Inspections for positions with increased safety risks
- Night work or crane operator inspections
An occupational medical examination may consist of a questionnaire, physical examination, biometric measurements, and specific tests such as vision, hearing, or lung function, depending on the purpose of the examination.
The goal is clear: to ascertain an employee’s suitability for a position and, where necessary, to protect the employee themselves or their environment.
