Periodic Occupational Health Examination (POHE)
Periodic Occupational Health Examination (POHE)
What is a Periodic Occupational Health Examination (POHE)?
A PAGO (Periodic Occupational Health Examination) is a preventive medical examination focused on work-related health risks. As an employer, you are required by the Working Conditions Act to offer employees an appropriate PAGO if they are exposed to specific occupational risks while performing their duties.
Artemis Health’s PAGO is fully tailored to the RI&E and the actual working conditions within your organization. As a result, the examinations address the risks relevant to employees’ job roles and work environments. Examples include physical strain, computer work, noise, hazardous substances, night shifts, or psychosocial work-related stress.
The assessment begins with an online questionnaire and is followed by a personal consultation with a medical professional. During this consultation, the results are discussed, and targeted examinations and measurements are conducted. The goal is to identify health complaints and occupational risks at an early stage, prevent absenteeism, and strengthen long-term employability.
Everything is handled in strict confidence. Employees receive personalized feedback and practical advice. Employers receive only anonymized group reports that help improve working conditions, prevention policies, and employability strategies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions about POHE & PMO at Artemis Health
What is a POHE?
A POHE (Periodic Occupational Health Examination) is a preventive medical examination specifically focused on health risks arising from work. This may include physical strain, screen work, noise exposure, hazardous substances, night shifts, or psychosocial workload.
The purpose of a POHE is to identify work-related health complaints at an early stage, prevent occupational diseases, and keep employees sustainably employable. The examination is always tailored to the RI&E and the specific risks within your organization.
Is a POHE mandatory?
Yes. Under the Dutch Working Conditions Act (Arbowet), employers are required to periodically offer employees a POHE when the RI&E identifies health risks within the workplace.
The content and frequency of the examination must be aligned with the nature of the work and the risks employees may encounter.
Why is a POHE important for organizations?
A well-structured POHE helps organizations to:
- identify health risks at an early stage
- reduce absenteeism and employee dropout
- gain insight into work-related strain
- help prevent occupational diseases
- demonstrate good employership
- strengthen prevention policies with concrete data
In addition, a POHE contributes to sustainable employability and a safe working environment.
How does Artemis Health ensure that the examination aligns with our organization?
Artemis Health uses the RI&E as the foundation for every POHE. Based on job profiles, working conditions, and identified occupational risks, we create an examination tailored to your organization.
This means you do not receive a standard examination, but a customized POHE that aligns with your organization, industry, and type of work.
Can we decide ourselves which components are included?
Yes. Artemis Health works with a modular approach. This means components can be added or adjusted, as long as the examination remains aligned with the RI&E and legal requirements.
We actively advise on the content to ensure the examination remains medically relevant, practical to carry out, and legally compliant.
How is employee privacy safeguarded?
- is accessible only to the employee and the medical professional
- is kept strictly separate from employer information
- is processed in accordance with the GDPR, WGBO, and medical professional standards
What does a group report provide in practice?
- physical workload
- work pressure and recovery
- screen-related strain
- psychosocial workload
- exposure to work-related risks
- differences between job groups or departments
How demanding is a POHE for the organization?
- efficient scheduling on-site or at an external location
- digital questionnaires completed in advance
- short processing times per employee
- clear communication towards participants
Can POHEs also be carried out on-site?
Yes. Depending on the selected modules, we carry out POHEs on-site, at external examination centers, or in a hybrid format.
Together, we determine which approach best fits the organization and the nature of the employees’ work.
What is the role of HR or management during the process?
- defining the objectives
- determining the content and structure of the examination
- aligning the examination with the RI&E
- interpreting the group report
How often should a PAGO be offered?
The frequency depends on the nature of the work, the identified risks, and the outcomes of the RI&E.
Many organizations choose to offer a POHE once every three to five years, depending on the industry and job groups. For high-risk work, a higher frequency may be advisable.
